New variety of oolong tea developed in Taitung
TAITUNG, Taiwan -- A new variety of oolong tea has been developed on a noted tea plantation in the eastern county of Taitung, with a taste that is described as smooth and naturally sweet.
The new variety, called red oolong tea, was developed as a result of joint efforts between a farmer’s association in Luye township in the eastern county of Taitung and the Council of Agriculture’s (COA’s) Tea Research and Extension Station in the northern county of Taoyuan.
The red oolong tea was grown on the Fulu tea plantation in Luye.
Tea produced on the plantation recently won the top prize in a competition sponsored by the Cabinet-level COA.
The development of the new variety of tea was aimed at helping to boost the plantation’s competitive edge, both in terms of product quality and quantity, which had declined as a result of warmer winter conditions over the past few years
